The Dark Lady by R.J. Hore

Young Princess Nefasti is left the heiress to the throne of Vadio after her Father dies (poisoned) and her Mother as well. But her Uncles are fighting among themselves over who will become the Regent once she is of marrying age. She has many suitors wanting her hand in marriage just for control. But Nefasti is only ten years old, and not of marrying age.

A fascinating story with a very young leading lady. Nefasti, at ten years of age is well educated beyond her years. She is strong willed, and pigheaded, she definitely knows what she wants out of life (at such an early age).

The story is well written, and each chapter begins with a brief narration. That helps in following along with the story. There are many characters, all are well developed and complex. The story is original, the plot is steady. There are secrets, twists , drama and suspense.

Overall I feel The Dark Lady was an enjoyable read for young-adult and adult readers. I like the cover as well, it has a mysterious feel about it.

The first thing I am going to say about this book is that I was confused as to why it was called The Dark Lady. To me, that title conjures up the image that the lady in question is not necessarily a good person and may have evil practices. There was nothing in this book that explained why Queen Nefasti was the Dark Lady (if in fact that is who the author was referring to). She is a child; she has no special powers; she has no tricks nor can she practice magic. The only thing that could be considered dark about her is that she prefers to wear black or blood red clothing.

I wanted to like this book but I couldn't. I thought that maybe the story would improve and something cool would happen like dragons would come out or she would turn into an evil sorceress. None of those things happened. I don't think I will be continuing the series as I didn't see a reason for there to be a continuation after the first book.
It was fun getting lost in book 1 of this epic medieval fantasy!

The Dark Lady is not just a story of a ten year old girl surviving by her wits, it’s also a look into human nature, and how one so young taps into that nature…the best and the worst.

Princess Nefasti suddenly becomes an orphan when her father, the King, is murdered, and her mother dies, her death subsequently related to the murder. Nefasti and the Kingdom of Vadio are now up for grabs…and coveted by her father’s three unscrupulous brothers, and by three surrounding kingdoms anxious to take ownership of the ancient monarchy because of its strategic position, history, and wealth.

Even though she’s crowned Queen, Nefasti soon learns that she is a minor inconvenience and only survives…thus far…because of her royal blood. The Three Stooges…er, I mean her uncles, argue over who should be regent. Surrounding kingdoms begin to send in offers of marriage. One of her uncles even “volunteers” to marry her. (And this is where, despite this being fantasy, that no amount of mind expansion can keep one from saying, “Ew. Pedophile much?”) Fortunately, royal law forbids Nefasti from being betrothed before she’s twelve, and married before she’s fourteen. While she may be safe from matrimony for now, even her supporters insist someone needs to be chosen to lead. (READ MAN) She doesn’t understand why she just can’t be Queen and rule Vadio.

With so much happening so fast, the poor child still hasn’t been able to mourn her parents’ deaths. It is restless nights, and a child’s natural curiosity that lead her to discover hidden passageways that seem to run all through the castle – and no one else seems to know exists. Surely the creation of some early King of Vadio. These passageways will be instrumental in Nefasti’s future decisions…and survival.

It is unclear whether Nefasti was being groomed by her father to be Queen, but it is quite clear that she was paying attention to everything he did and said. It was surprising to me that no one keyed in to her intelligence and determination. But, it served her well that no one did. The more she was shunned and locked away, the more time she had to plot and plan…and explore the castle passageways that held such a wealth of information.

Being a child, Nefasti still needs flights of fancy. But she is not the cute, precocious type. Nefasti is indeed a Queen inside a child’s body. She builds support and gains allegiance one person at a time. Her initial supporters are the invisible type – children and servants – but her wits and heart soon attract adults.

Each chapter begins a passage about the young Queen. Rumors, magic and paranormal activities are bandied about as it becomes obvious the narrator is being questioned by someone. Their identity is divulged near story’s end, but if you’re paying attention, you might be able to figure out who it is long before then.

Murders, kidnap attempts, lies/deceit and betrayals versus a ten year old girl. Will she prevail? Take the journey with Nefasti…and watch and learn.
